Moratti: ‘Barcelona without Messi…’

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti believes the absence of Lionel Messi “narrows the gap” to Barcelona.

The Argentine superstar broke his arm against Sevilla at the weekend, so he’s out of tonight’s Champions League game at Camp Nou.

“The absence of Messi narrows the gap between the two teams,” Moratti told reporters outside the Univerò festival.

“It adds balance to the match. It’ll be a tough game, but if we play our best against Barcelona there’s nothing to say Inter can’t come out of it well.”

Moratti was then asked about the possibility of winning the Scudetto this season.

“It’s difficult to think about reaching that goal, when you look at Juventus it seems difficult. You never know, but that’s how it is.

“In the meantime we’ll try to do good things and progress in the Champions League, and don’t underestimate the Coppa Italia, a competition which means a lot to me.”

The Nerazzurri famously won the treble under Moratti’s ownership, with Jose Mourinho leading them to that triumph.

“Jose Mourinho was the Coach I’d always looked for and wanted for Inter, like the [Helenio] Herrera of my youth.

“I changed Coach so often because when you’re a big club like us and you lose three games in a row you have to find solutions.

“All those I had were great people, I have excellent memories of them. Roberto Mancini gave me a breakthrough, he did an excellent job. But when Mourinho comes along…

“The signings? Javier Zanetti was the best, it couldn’t be otherwise. But I’m also very attached to Paul Ince.”
